The HSA, HSENI and Construction Industry Federation have launched a two-week campaign focused on preventing deaths and serious injuries involving construction plant, machinery and vehicles.

The People-Plant-Safe Separation Campaign, running from 7 to 18 September, follows 25 construction-related deaths across the island of Ireland between 2016 and 2025 involving plant, machinery or vehicles.

Keeping people and plant apart

The campaign will see inspectors carry out targeted visits to construction sites, focusing on how risks are managed where workers and moving equipment operate in the same space.

Inspectors will look at areas including:

• Traffic management and site planning
• Plant operator competence and training
• Exclusion zones
• Communication between workers and operators
• Safe systems of work

For health and safety professionals, the campaign is a reminder that effective risk management around vehicles and machinery relies on more than having procedures in place. Those controls need to be properly planned, communicated and followed on site.

While the campaign runs for two weeks, the HSA and HSENI are stressing that preventing serious incidents involving plant and machinery requires ongoing attention from employers, contractors, operators and workers.
