This July marks 40 years since Suzy Lamplugh’s disappearance. Her going missing sparked important conversations around personal safety and violence against women and girls in the UK, conversations that are continued to this day thanks to the work of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust.

Suzy, working as an estate agent, vanished on July 28, 1986 after going to meet a client known as "Mr Kipper" in Fulham, London. Her body was never found and in 1993 she was declared dead, presumed murdered.

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust was established in 1986 and remains the UK's pioneering personal safety charity and leading stalking authority. The Trust is widely regarded as a field expert in lone-working, personal safety training and stalking training. The National Stalking Helpline was set up by the Trust in 2010, helping over 85,000 victims since. It is the only service of its kind globally.

The Trust campaigns regularly to raise greater awareness of personal safety and stalking issues, as well as demanding systemic change where needed, influencing public policy, and promoting a society in which people can feel and be safer.

Its longest running campaign has been the licensing of the operators and drivers of minicabs and private hire vehicles, which begun in 1998. This campaigning and policy work has been pivotal to changes in legislation and practice nationally - including in the introduction of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, and the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012.

The subject of lone working is a key topic at the Health & Safety Event, highlighted by the Lone Worker Safety Live conference which takes place at the show. Hosted by Worthwhile Training's Nicole Vazquez - widely respected for her work in the lone worker sector over the past twenty years - the agenda brings together experts in their field to explore the challenges for lone and remote workers.

For many years the safety and personal security risks to lone workers have been recognised. In addition, there is now a greater awareness of the wellbeing issues associated with being isolated from others during the working day.

On the 40th anniversary of Suzy's disappearance, we remember her through her family and the legacy her parents left in creating the Trust.
