Looking Ahead: What the Budget Signals for Safer, Fairer Work
Beyond the main headlines, the UK Budget also set out measures that signal important changes ahead for workplace health, safety and employment standards.
The government set out plans aimed at tackling poor working practices, worker exploitation and unsafe conditions - issues that continue to affect many sectors.
Stronger Enforcement on the Horizon
The Budget signalled tougher action against certain employers, including businesses that repeatedly close and reopen to avoid legal or financial responsibility. In the years ahead, more company directors could face disqualification where serious or repeated worker rights breaches occur.
There are also plans for the Fair Work Agency to publicly name employers found to have broken employment laws from 2026, increasing transparency and pressure to comply.
For health and safety professionals, this points to a future where accountability sits more firmly at leadership level, rather than only on-site operations.
Why This Matters for Health and Safety
Workers in insecure or exploitative roles are often at higher risk of injury, illness and unsafe conditions. While enforcement changes take time, these measures suggest a longer-term shift towards addressing the causes of unsafe work, not just the consequences.
This aligns with ongoing calls from the health and safety community for stronger oversight, clearer responsibilities and earlier intervention.
Wider Workplace Health Signals
The budget also outlined support likely to influence workplace health in the future, including additional help for people with health conditions or disabilities returning to work, and expanded tax relief for employer-provided health measures such as eye tests, homeworking equipment and flu vaccinations.
The announcements generally reflect a greater focus on decent work, leadership responsibility and prevention. For organisations, the message is clear. Investing in good health and safety practice, ethical employment and worker wellbeing now will be far easier - and cheaper - than reacting later as enforcement and expectations continue to rise.
