Transport for London (TfL) will face prosecution over alleged safety failures after a woman was struck and killed by a bus at Walthamstow bus station.

Grace Mecaley (74) died after being hit by a route 212 bus at the north-east London station in December 2023.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) alleges that between 1st January 2004 and 15th December 2023, TfL failed to ensure traffic routes at the northern crossing of the station were suitable for the people and vehicles using them.

The charge is brought under regulations specific to governing the safety of pedestrians and traffic routes in the workplace.

TfL was served with a notification of contravention by the HSE in March 2024, after inspectors had found the transport authority had not provided safe crossings at the station. A second notice followed in March 2025, this time over the behaviour of bus drivers at the site.

TfL said at that time it had reminded all of its bus operators of their responsibilities towards passengers and pedestrians.

The first hearing is due at Westminster Magistrates Court on 25th September.

The bus station sits directly opposite Walthamstow Central Underground and Overground station and is a busy junction for the area, being utilised by about 19 routes.

In November and December 2024, the station was closed for six weeks while new pedestrian crossings were installed on the northern and western sides.

Lorna Murphy, TfL's director of buses, said: "We treat bus station safety as part of our wider Vision Zero and Bus Safety Programme, combining operational controls, infrastructure measures and operator assurance to reduce risk to customers, pedestrians and staff in bus station environments.

"In December 2024, we completed works to permanently improve pedestrian safety at Walthamstow Bus Station. We care deeply about the safety and security of everyone who uses or works on our transport network."
